Workshop Title: ‘The local church and the Big Event’
Bryan Mason
British churches are getting into shape for the London 2012 Olympics. Bryan Mason has developed the resource of ‘Higher Games’ to enable the local church make a difference in its community. Other international events can also be covered by further resources ready- made to interface with those outside the Church – Higher Rugby and Higher Football serve this purpose.
This workshop will outline practical steps that can be taken when a nation’s interest is captured by a big sporting event.
Planning for the Unexpected. Are you Ready for an Emergency?
Brad Bassett
“Hey! I need some help here! Someone just collapsed.” The phrase no one in sports ministry ever wants to hear, regardless of the program or facility in which one works. This workshop will address some prevention ideas and emergency planning for the event that no one wants to happen. In the workshop, we will discuss and develop an emergency plan for your program, discuss how to recognize, prevent, and treat minor injuries and accidents, and look at safety plans for outside events. Additionally, we will talk about how to keep your program/facility as safe as possible for all of your participants. No one ever wants an accident or an emergency to happen, but statistics show that they will. Are you and your staff ready to respond to that unwanted event?

Retaining your sanity while navigating the minefield of being both a sports and youth pastor of a church
Ryan Farr
Youth and Sports Pastor… Director of Outreach and Recreation… Pastor of Community Center Services and Care… The titles are endless and various! But for some reason, more and more vocational ministry workers find themselves in one of the most fascinating predicaments; the dual-role ministry position. We find ourselves pulled between volleyball league registrations and church family camping trips. More than once we've inadvertently scheduled a league parent informational meeting on the same day as our largest annual youth rally. And of course, we've sat in our office chair pulling our hair and asking the question, "what on earth am I doing with two jobs?!" But rest assured… You are not alone in the madness! And God has a plan for you and the special ministry he's placed you in. Understand what it means to be a dual-role minister, grasp the concept of the "two minds" mentality that can make or break us and learn how to survive and even thrive as we fit our 90 hours of work into 45! "Single role" ministers (whatever that means) welcome as well.
Theological, Biblical and Philosophical Foundations for Sports Ministry
Rodger Oswald
This seminar will establish foundational truths that undergird a Sports Ministry which is based on sound theological, biblical and philosophical principles. Just because sports is popular is no reason for the individual or church to employ it “doing church.” Pragmatism must give way to sound doctrine and biblical truth that create a clear apologetic. This seminar will allow the attendee the opportunity to leave with a clear and biblical defense for the use of Sports Ministry that can be integrated with other ministries of the church in order for the church to be more effective evangelistically and in disciple making.
Overcoming the Local Church Sports Outreach Disconnect Syndrome - How to Transition those far from Christ into the Body of Christ
Greg Linville
Most churches rarely experience anyone actually becoming a participating member through church evangelistic efforts – even churches with large Sports Outreach Ministries. There are various reasons why churches don’t experience evangelistic success but it is assumed churches with Sports Outreach Ministries are succeeding in these matters. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The sad fact is, a huge gap often exists between a church’s sports outreach and the broader church. This seminar will describe the basic “disconnect” between most local church Sports Outreach Ministries and the overall church. It will explain why this “disconnect” occurs and how it can be overcome.
Running Effective and Efficient Meetings
Dale Connally
You are busy. So are the folks helping you with your ministry. The last thing you want to do is waste their time. Let’s explore some best and worst practices for meetings. This session should be helpful as you relate to your ministry team, board, or church staff.
Maximizing Outreach to your community through Partnerships
Jeff Story
The most effective way to reach people for Christ is to go where they are. There are many community agencies who are waiting for the church to help them do what they do better. Due to government budget cuts, doors are opening for the church to partner in the community in ways that were never possible before. Come and learn how to use community partnerships to reach more people than your church ever has before through sports.
Fitness Ministry: An Often Overlooked Opportunity
David Bundrick and Debbie Brown
Ten years ago, as a Recreation Minister, I did not consider Fitness as a viable ministry possibility. Now, it's the backbone of the ministry I lead. In this workshop, my Fitness Director & I will share why every church should seriously consider offering Fitness Ministry to its members & the community. We will discuss what we have found to be best practices & less than best practices as well as maximizing the ministry potential of fitness.
Knowing and Utilizing CSRM
Greg Linville
This seminar will describe the Vision and Mission of CSRM as well as detail its “Four-C”
Strategy. It will outline how CSRM can receive the most value from their CSRM membership and how they can become more involved.
Developing a Local Church Program for Wellness through a Vow to God
Dickie Hill
The Church’s primary objective is to lead people to God and then help them to grow and mature as His servants. Sports and recreation in the church provides an excellent opportunity for this to occur. One method to strengthen spiritual growth is through the use of personal vows. Research shows that people who make vows to God on particular issues are more successful than those who do not. Making vows to God is something He desires and sometimes commands. God provides instruction in His Word concerning vows. The workshop will use these scriptures to outline how vows can be used to develop spiritual growth through sports and recreation. Workshop participants will learn the steps involved to help those in their programs to engage in making personal vows to God. Potential pitfalls that can limit success will be discussed. Vows are appropriate for all areas of life; physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual.
Healing, Help and Hope or Those in Ministry
Rodger Oswald
Woundedness and battle fatigue in ministry is the norm, not the exception. How does one deal with personal and spiritual injury? Where does one go for healing or to discover hope to go on and serve effectively? This seminar will look a the sorts of attacks that come as well as solutions to repel and/or heal in order to “get back in the race” with joy and purpose and the assurance that God is pleased with our service to Him.
Workshop Title: ‘The Active Contemplatist’
Bryan Mason
After several decades of involvement in physical education and local church sports ministry Bryan has taken some steps along the path of the active contemplatist. Whilst trekking the Sinai Desert and following in the steps of Moses he began to realize how vital it is to take regular ‘time-outs’ with God before going back into the ‘game’.
This workshop will look at practical examples of how such a journey can be undertaken and how this can be beneficial to the active, if not frenetic, sports minister.
