Session 1 - Wednesday morning

Would Jesus Tackle Bret Favre - Sportsmanship, Gamesmanship or Christmanship?
Presenter - Greg Linville
Even if competition and sport as a whole can be justified biblically and theologically, does it logically follow that each individual sport is automatically compatible with a Christian worldview?  What are the criteria for deciding which particular sports are compatible with a Christian world-view and which ones are not?  Using orthodox Christian theology as a foundation, a template will be presented to determine which sports are biblically defensible.  In addition, this template will provide the means for determining specific actions, attitudes and involvements within biblically defensible sports to ensure God-honoring participation by Christian competitors.

Moving People from the Fields of Play to the Worship Center
Presenter - Rodger Oswald
Too often a Sports Ministry loses sight of the mission and gets absorbed in organization and administrative details at the expense of fulfilling ministry goals.  The sports ministry becomes mere activity and does not serve the evangelistic goal that should be a priority.  Even when the Sports Ministry effectively incorporates evangelistic components, that ministry can still fall short by not integrating those people into the local assembly. A good Sports Ministry must plan to move people from the activity or event to the church.  Stepping stones leading from the event to the worship center must be planned and carried out if the ministry is going to impact the local body and serve the individual.  This workshop will examine how to create those stepping stones in order to integrate the spiritually curious, the newly committed or the re-engaged Christian into the body of Christ.

Empowering Lay leaders for Ministry
Presenter - Tom Schooley
The effectiveness of your ministry is directly related to the strength of your ministry leaders.  You cannot do everything, all the time.  This workshop will discuss the various strategies used to develop a qualified, passionate, leadership team.  The speaker will combine experiences in sports outreach, men’s ministry, and prison ministry along with biblical principles to convey a plan that will help vocational ministers to develop lay leaders in their ministries.

Children, Youth, Community & Sports: Strategies for Mobilizing the Church to Reach Children, Youth and Families with the Gospel in Innovative Ways
Presenter - Maged Fawzy
What do you get when a group of sports ministry leaders collaborate with a group of children's ministry leaders?  What do you get when these leaders dream of where every one of our 2.1 billion children feels safe, appreciated and confident?  How can every child have the opportunity to respond to the God who loves them, and where that love is demonstrated for them?  You get KidsGames. This workshop will serve as a case study of the The KidsGames movement that began in Cairo Egypt in 2000 and has spread around the world.  Hear the story of how KidsGames has renewed a vision for sports ministry, how it has opened the door for the un-churched and grown a partnership of churches and the community. Discussion will also focus on the structure of leadership for these programs and in particular, the opportunities that exist for young leaders to be involved in the ministry.

Adult Sports With a Purpose
Presenter - Jeff Story
What if your church leadership came to you and said, “We will only continue to do sports ministry if we can see that the sports ministry is critical to our mission?  How can you be sure that your adult sports leagues are accomplishing your church’s vision?  How should we train our adult sports team captains?  Making your leagues an outreach tool. Helping people connect to your church through sports.  In this workshop we cover these topics helping you to plan and run an adult sports league that has purpose.

Session 2 - Wednesday afternoon

Children’s Sports Leagues that Make a Difference
Presenters - Danny Downing and Shane Millard
We have a tremendous opportunity in our sports-crazed culture to offer leagues that will impact children and families for the Kingdom. We will look at building the self-esteem of the participants, training the coaches, teaching the sport, and being intentional about sharing the love of Christ in our leagues. We want the seminar to be discussion based so we can share ideas about how to help our coaches see that they can have an even greater impact beyond the sport experience itself. Topics will include: goals and purposes, building self-esteem, the importance of teaching the sport, training coaches to see a higher calling and sharing the gospel.

Serving the People of Sport: Chaplaincy & Mentoring
Presenter - Steve Connor
It is a sad inevitability that the stresses of those involved in sport continues to heighten. If we want to continue to have a Christian presence in the culture shaping world of sport -  at all levels  - we will need men and women who are willing to serve athletes and coaches like Christ: to be “salt and light.”  In this workshop we will look at the “big picture” of chaplaincy and how you can get involved – immediately. We will also look at how serving athletes can be seductive and how our motives must be absolutely pristine! Lastly, we will discuss all the do’s and the many-many mistakes we have made over the years trying to grow an army of coaches and athletes for our Lord.

Sports Minister Goes to PRISON!
Presenters - Paul Johnson and Ben Walters
While here on earth, Jesus spent most of His time with society's "outcasts"-crooked tax collectors, prostitutes, and other "sinners." It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick, Jesus said. And He offered them the healing of His forgiveness and friendship. So if Jesus were on earth today, you can be sure we would find Him in prison - spending time with even the most loathed criminals and outcasts. Come and hear how the crack of a bat causes criminals to give themselves to God, how God uses the clanging of a horseshoe to bring salvation, and how the God of forgiveness extents His love through basketball despite a 15 foot high razor wire fence. Come and hear how YOU can be a vessel of hope to those who have fallen and personally see the transforming power of Christ's love behind bars. "I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." Matthew 25:36

Intentional Outreach
Presenter - Steve Quatro
Have you ever thought that using sports and recreation to reach out does not need to be so complicated?  By making numerous mistakes and having some success leading a church sports ministry and by observing hundreds of churches, Steve has developed six simple principles that will help you implement programs and see measureable results.  In this workshop he will share these principles.

A Better Way to Do Devotionals - Integrating Sports & Ministry
Presenter - Bob Schindler
Injection or Integration - how do you tend to mix Sports and Ministry?  When you look at the way “devotionals” or prayer are often structured, the model appears to be one of injection more than integration, where the spiritual component feels almost forced into the sports environment.  In this workshop, we will look at an integrated model of Sports and Ministry – one with a seamless transition from Sports to Biblical truth – that can be applied to any sport.  As Sports Ministers have been exposed to this model, the result has been significant enthusiasm and passion for carrying this back to the fields and courts.  If you understand the power of sports but sometimes struggle with how take advantage of that power and connect sports with ministry/Biblical truth, you’ll want to learn this model.
